Discipleship Pathway

Thank you for stepping out in faith to join believers across the centuries in Jesus’ call to make disciples.  Whether you’re the disciple or the discipler, we are grateful for your willingness, humility, and courage to join us in that mission.

This journey will not only help you grow and mature in your own life with Jesus,  but it will equip you to move from being a disciple to being a true disciple maker.  Let’s get started.

Outcome: The disciple learns the value of denying themselves for the sake of God and others.

This Module introduces the disciple to the importance of living selflessly. Before we can have a heart for the world, we must first realize we are not the center of the universe. By engaging in practices that silence the selfish voices inside, we retrain our hearts to desire ourselves less, desire God more, and live more compassionate lives.

Module 1: Prayer

Outcome: The disciple establishes a meaningful rhythm of daily prayer.

Perhaps the most essential trait of a disciple is prayer. Prayer is our lifeline to God. That’s why it’s the very first outcome in this journey. In this module, the disciple will be exposed to some different approaches and teachings on prayer before finally committing to a daily prayer rhythm. Remember, each of us is different. The point is for the disciple to discover how they best connect with God, and to move toward union with God through prayer in whatever manner is best.

Module 6: Generosity

Outcome: The disciple embodies the freedom of generosity.

Module 3—the first forward arrow— discussed living selflessly.  Before we can live out justice and mercy, we must get over ourselves!  This module pushes it a bit further.  A selfless disciple embodies generosity.  Many people are held in the grip of their possessions and finances (even if they have very little compared to others).  But a disciple of Jesus understands that these things are not ours to have, but ours to steward. When we make this shift, greed looses its hold, and we find a new level of freedom.

Module 2: Guidance

Outcome: With the help of a guide, the disciple discerns their unique role within God’s story.

One important aspect of following Jesus is understanding how God has used your life experiences to form you into who you are today. We often think our lives are chains of random, meaningless events. However, when we encounter Jesus, we realize that we have a God who is present in all of it—even the difficult times. In this module, the disciple will have an opportunity to plot out the main events of their life, and with the discipler, discern God’s presence and purpose through it all. This is an exercise in sharing your story and discerning your calling—something that must be done in community.

Module 7: Awareness

Outcome: The disciple is aware of God’s presence in all things and is eager to engage with him.

This vision of two large sources of light pouring into the same space is an illustration of what union with God means. It is to exist in such a way that it becomes unclear where my will ends and God’s will begins because my will is aligned with His. To get to this point, we must become aware of God’s active presence all around us, all the time. This is the culmination of union with God. This module will help us understand that God is moving all around us, and invites us to join Him there. Our job is to develop eyes to see and hearts that are courageous and eager to obey.

Module 3: Self-Denial

Outcome: The disciple learns the value of denying themselves for the sake of God and others.

This Module introduces the disciple to the importance of living selflessly. Before we can have a heart for the world, we must first realize we are not the center of the universe. By engaging in practices that silence the selfish voices inside, we retrain our hearts to desire ourselves less, desire God more, and live more compassionate lives.

Module 8: Hospitality

Outcome: The disciple realizes the joy of creating belonging in the family of God.

This module will make space for us to develop this habit of welcoming others (who are often not like us) into our lives. However, it’s not only about inviting people to our house. It’s about living a life of openness to others and inviting them to the family of God. For a christian to live a life of hospitality is to: always inviting people to a seat at God’s table.

Module 4: Scripture

Outcome: The disciple learns the grand narrative of the Bible and forms a daily rhythm of scripture reading and study.

In this module, the disciple will get a 30,000 foot view of the general story arc of the Bible. Then, an opportunity to establish a Bible reading plan will close out the module. We’re embarking on a lifelong journey to understanding who God is, what he’s done, and who we are in light of it. Learn to enjoy the ride!

Module 9: Living Justly

Outcome: The disciple commits to being a tangible part of the solution for an injustice in the world.

This is the final module for the “forward” arrow (justice and mercy). Our discussions about self-denial and generosity ultimately lead us here: how will we be a part of the solution to injustice in the world? This is where we really learn to be salt and light. It’s not always easy, but it is the way of Jesus.

Module 5: Confession

Outcome: The disciple understands and practices a life of confession within community.

“Confession.” The word makes us want to run and hide. Nobody intuitively wants to be vulnerable with their faults! However, we must realize that we arrive at healing through vulnerability. In this module, the disciple will walk this road with the discipler as their guide. Confession isn’t about guilt; it’s a gift. Through it, we find freedom from sin and healing in our relationships.

Module 10: Making Disciples

Outcome: The disciple makes a disciple.

It all comes down to this! For the past several months, you’ve been rehearsing the up, down, and forward arrows. Now it’s time to address the final direction of discipleship: backward. This is where we turn around and reach out to someone behind us on the journey and invite them into our care. In other words, this is where we become disciples who makes disciples. Once this happens, a multiplication movement has begun.
